Roku devices are designed to run the latest software. Your Roku TV or streaming player checks for updates when it turns on and every 24–36 hours. Updates usually install automatically without interrupting use.
If an update fails or gets stuck, follow the steps below to diagnose and fix the issue.
Step 1: Wait and try again
If your Roku device shows an update error, wait a few minutes and try again. Roku update services may be temporarily unavailable. If Roku is aware of a larger outage, an alert will appear on the Roku support website. Try updating again once the outage is resolved.
Step 2: Confirm the correct network is selected
Connecting to the wrong Wi-Fi network can prevent updates.
Go to Settings > Network on your Roku device and confirm the network name is correct. If you are unsure, reconnect using the correct wireless name and password.
Step 3: Test your Internet connection
Your Roku device must have a stable internet connection to update.
Use a phone or computer connected to the same router and open a website to confirm the internet is working. If other devices work but the Roku update still fails, the Wi-Fi signal may be too weak.
To improve the signal:
- Move the Roku player closer to the router
- Reduce obstacles like walls or cabinets
- Avoid placing the Roku player behind the TV
- See this article for steps to improve your wireless connection
Step 4: Restart your Roku and router
Restarting often resolves update issues.
To restart your Roku device:
- Unplug the power cable, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in
Or restart from the menu:
- Press Home
- Go to Settings > System > Power
- Select System restart
To restart your router:
- Unplug it from power
- Wait 20–30 seconds
- Plug it back in
Your Roku device should reconnect automatically.
Step 5: Check for the update manually
If the update does not start on its own:
- Press Home
- Go to Settings > System > System update
- Select Check now
| Error code | What it means | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| 001 | Cannot reach the update server | Check internet and restart Roku device and router |
| 002 | Internet connection is too weak | Improve Wi-Fi signal or move Roku device closer |
| 003 | Update cannot be downloaded | Restart devices or use Ethernet |
| 004 | Software update failed | Restart devices and try again |
| 005 | Connection timed out | Restart network or try again later |
Step 6: Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi if available
Some Roku devices support Ethernet connections.
Connecting your Roku player directly to the router with an Ethernet cable provides a faster and more reliable connection and often resolves update failures.
Step 7: Fix wireless audio update issues
If you use Roku wireless speakers, a wireless soundbar, or a subwoofer:
- Make sure the audio device is plugged in
- Check that the status light is on
- Move the audio device closer to the Roku player or TV
- Restart both devices
Wireless audio devices update at the same time as the Roku they are paired with.
If the update still fails
Try connecting your Roku device to a different internet source, such as a mobile hotspot. If the update works on another network, the issue is likely your home internet connection. If problems continue, contact Roku Support for help.
