"This HDMI input does not support HDCP 2.2” error message when enabling 4K


HDCP 2.2 is the latest evolution in copy and content protection standards.  Copy protection/content protection has been around for a long time, and in its early stages was what prevented you from copying VHS tapes.  The latest copy protection technology is called HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) and is used for digital devices like Blu-Ray players, cable boxes and Roku devices.

HDCP 2.2 is specifically for UltraHD (4K) content.  In order to play 4K content from your Roku player, your TV must be capable of supporting HDCP 2.2 over HDMI 2.0.  If you have your Roku player connected to an A/V receiver, then every device in your video chain must support HDCP 2.2 — your TV and any component the video signal passes through.

Note: You must also use an HDMI cable that is capable of supporting UltraHD (4K).

If your TV or receiver does not support HDCP 2.2 and you try to play 4K content, you may see this message:

Checking the features of your TV and other devices 

Here are the steps to verify that your other devices are capable of supporting 4K content:

  1. Your TV must be 4K UHD with an available HDCP 2.2 HDMI input.
  2. Even if your TV supports 4K, not all inputs on that TV may be HDCP 2.2 enabled. Check the owner’s guide or TV manufacturer’s online support instructions to make sure your TV meets these requirements.
  3. If you are connecting your Roku player through an AVR, the AVR must also support HDCP 2.2. Every device in the chain between the Roku player and the TV must be HDCP 2.2 compliant.  Check the documentation for your AVR to make sure that HDCP 2.2 is supported on the HDMI input that you are using. 
  4. If you are using an AVR and you want to see if it’s the source of the issue, you should remove the AVR from the chain and connect your Roku player directly to a HDCP 2.2 input on your TV and see if you can stream 4K content when connected directly.

If one or all of your devices is not HDCP 2.2 compliant, you will see the error message above when you connect your Roku player.

If you also want to enable HDR (your Roku player supports HDR-10):

  1. Make sure you have HDR enabled in your TV’s settings and are using the configured port.
  2. Your TV and AVR may need a software upgrade to support HDR. Refer to your TV’s documentation or online help for more information.
  3. Check to make sure any other device in the chain connecting your TV to the Roku player is configured to support HDR. Your online user guide or set-up manual for those devices should have instructions. 

If you have a 4K TV, and your AVR does not support HDCP 2.2, you can still get both 4K video and use your AVR by connecting the Roku player directly to the HDCP 2.2 input on your TV, and using either ARC (Audio Return Channel) or S/PDIF to route the audio from the TV back to the AVR. 

If you can’t or don’t want to rewire the connections between the TV and the AVR, you can still enjoy Full HD content.  Set your Display Settings for either 720p or 1080p only.  You can find these settings under Settings>Display type
