All Roku® streaming players, including the Roku® Streaming Stick® and Streaming Stick+, will work with any television with an HDMI® connection. However, certain features such as 4K Ultra HD or 4K HDR require that you connect your Roku player to a compatible television that can support these features (see below). The Roku Express+ and certain older Roku player models include a composite video connection and will work with TVs without an HDMI port (see below).
Aside from a Streaming Stick, when connecting a Roku streaming player to your TV using an HDMI connection, we recommend you use a High Speed HDMI Cable if your TV only supports 720p and 1080p, or a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable if your TV also supports 4K or 4K HDR.
A Roku Streaming Stick connects directly to the HDMI port on your TV, and does not need an HDMI cable.
Note: A Roku Streaming Stick can be powered by connecting to the USB port on select TVs. For further details review the specific setup instructions below.
Questions about 4K and 4K HDR
- Do I need a 4K or 4K HDR compatible TV if I buy a Roku player that supports 4K or 4K HDR?
No. All 4K Roku streaming players will work with any television with an HDMI connection. However, you will not be able to take advantage of 4K resolution without a compatible 4K TV, or 4K HDR without a compatible 4K HDR TV. You will also need a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable unless you are connecting a Roku Streaming Stick+.
- Do I need a 4K or 4K HDR compatible Roku player if I have a 4K or 4K HDR compatible television?
No. All Roku streaming players will work for any television with an HDMI connection, so any Roku player can be connected to a 4K or 4K HDR compatible television. However, to stream movies and TV shows in 4K or 4K HDR you will need a compatible Roku streaming player and television that supports 4K or 4K HDR. You will also need a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable unless you are connecting a Streaming Stick+.

What if I have an older TV that does not have an HDMI connection?
Roku Express+ is designed for older televisions that do not have an HDMI connection. Roku Express+ is available exclusively from Walmart and includes composite audio and video connectors (and cable) found on most older televisions. It also includes an HDMI connection.
What if my older TV does not have an HDMI or composite connection?
Some older TVs may only have an RF antenna input that allows for an antenna or coaxial cable from the wall to be connected.
Roku streaming players will not directly connect to an RF antenna input, however, with a device called an RF modulator, you can use the composite audio and video connectors on Roku Express+ with an RF antenna input. An RF modulator converts the composite audio and video signals into an RF signal that can be accepted by older TVs with only an RF antenna input.
