Where do I get the Roku mobile app?

The Roku mobile app is a free application for iOS and Android devices that can be used with any Roku streaming device. Not only does it let you use your voice to speak commands, but you can also share personal photos and videos on your TV, listen to movies and shows privately on your headphones, discover new content to watch, and more. Learn how to install the Roku mobile app now.

How do I know if I have a Roku Enhanced Remote with voice?

The Roku Enhanced Remote with voice is supported on select Roku devices, and can be identified by the button with a microphone or magnifying glass icon.

You can use the product comparison chart to determine which current products support voice search via Roku remote.

If the remote for your Roku player does not support voice search, you can purchase a Roku Enhanced Remote with voice search from the Roku accessories store. Take note if your Roku player is listed as a supported device before making a purchase.

What can I do with voice search?

Below is a list of the voice search commands you can use with any Roku streaming device, along with some examples.

Roku TV voice controls

In addition to the examples listed above, you can use the additional voice commands listed below to control your Roku TV.

  • Switch inputs

Note: You must have an HD antenna connected to your Roku TV to use voice controls to change broadcast channels and launch Smart Guide. Additionally, you cannot use voice controls to switch inputs that have been assigned a custom name.

Can I power my Roku TV off or on with voice controls?

Yes. To power your Roku TV off, try saying something like “turn off” or “power off”. You can use a similar command to power your Roku TV on, but a power setting called Fast TV start must first be enabled. To enable Fast TV start, go to Settings > System > Power > Fast TV start.

  • Notes:

    • Fast TV start is not available on Roku TV models that have an Energy Star® designation.
    • Fast TV start uses more power than normal standby and overrides default power settings.

How do I use voice with my mobile device?

You can issue voice commands with your mobile device by accessing Channels, What’s On, or Remote on the Roku mobile app. To get started, launch the Roku mobile app and then follow the instructions below.

Channels and What’s On

  1. Tap Channels channels icon or What’s On what's on icon from the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap the magnifying glass magnifying glass icon at the top of the screen to access the search page.
  3. Tap the microphone icon microphone icon in the text box to initiate voice for search or control commands.

    • Note: The first time you use voice, the Roku mobile app will ask to access the microphone. You must grant permission to use voice controls.
  1. Clearly speak into your mobile device at a normal volume, and tap the middle of the screen when finished speaking.

Remote

  1. Tap Remote remote icon at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap the microphone icon microphone icon in the top right corner of the screen.

    • Note: The first time you use voice, the Roku mobile app will ask to access the microphone. You must grant permission to use voice search or control commands.
  1. Clearly speak into your mobile device at a normal volume, and tap the middle of the screen when finished speaking.

After your query is processed, the mobile app will carry out your request, either presenting you with a list of search results on your mobile device, or updating your Roku device.

How do I use voice with my Roku Enhanced Remote?

  1. Hold your remote face up in the palm of your hand.
  2. Point your remote upwards and position it about six inches from your mouth.
  3. Press and hold the microphone button microphone icon or magnifying glass button magnifying glass icon.
  4. With the button still pressed, clearly speak into your remote at a normal volume and release the button when finished.

After you release the button, your Roku device will carry out your request, delivering you to the Roku Search screen or elsewhere within the Roku interface.

What if my voice command is not recognized?

If your spoken phrase is not captured correctly, follow the on-screen prompts to try again. Make sure you are speaking clearly and at a normal volume.

For search requests, you can also use Roku Search with the on-screen keyboard.
