How to find movies and TV shows using Voice Search

Background

Roku® Voice Search allows you to quickly find entertainment you want to watch without having to type using the on-screen keyboard. Using your voice, you can search for a wide variety of entertainment across top channels, including movies, TV shows, short-form content, live streams, news, and even actors and directors.

Some Roku devices come with a voice-enabled remote control. You can use the Roku device comparison chart to determine which products include Voice Search via Roku remote.

If your Roku remote does not support Voice Search, you can still use the feature by installing the free Roku mobile app for iOS® and Android™ on your mobile device or, if your Roku device supports it, by purchasing a Roku Enhanced Remote with Voice Search from the Roku Store.

  • Note: When using Voice Search, simply speak the title or actor/director name, for example “Finding Nemo.” Voice Search will not work with full sentence commands like “Show me movies with Tom Hanks.”

Search using your Roku Enhanced Remote

Point your remote upwards and position it six inches from your mouth. Press and hold the magnifying glass icon  on your remote to initiate Voice Search. Speak your search term at a normal volume and release the button when done speaking. Once you release the button, you will see the Roku Search screen on your TV featuring the result of your query. Select an item to see more details including viewing options.

If you choose a viewing option on a channel that is not installed on your Roku device, you will be prompted to add the channel.

Search using your mobile device

To start, select the magnifying glass  at the top of the mobile app to initiate a search. Next, tap the microphone icon  in the text box to initiate Voice Search. Next, clearly say the movie, TV show, actor/director or channel and then tap the microphone button in the middle of the screen to complete your search. Once the mobile app processes your request, a list of results will be presented, tap the entry to see more details including viewing options.

If you choose a viewing option on a channel that is not installed on your Roku device, you will be prompted to add the channel.

What if my search was not recognized?

If your spoken phrase was not completely understood, follow the on-screen prompts and submit a new search request. You can also use Roku Search with the on-screen keyboard.
