How do I display photos, videos, and songs on my TV using Play on Roku?

Background

When you want to display personal media files on your TV screen, you may be able to use the Play on Roku feature built in to the free Roku mobile app for iOS® and Android devices. Play on Roku lets you share photos, videos, and songs stored on your compatible mobile device to your Roku streaming player or Roku TV. After you launch the mobile app and choose what to view from your phone or tablet, it will appear on your TV.

To use Play on Roku, you must install the latest version of the Roku mobile app on your compatible mobile device. You must also make sure to connect your phone or tablet to the same wireless network as your Roku device.

Can I share other types of content from my phone or tablet?

In addition to displaying personal media files on your TV with Play on Roku, you may be able to share other types of content from your compatible mobile device using the features described below.

  • Screen mirroring

    To replicate, or “mirror” everything you see on your mobile screen to your TV, a feature called screen mirroring can be used with compatible Android and Windows® devices. Learn more about using screen mirroring with your Roku device.

    Casting

    Certain channels such as YouTube and Netflix support a feature called casting that lets you direct a video, movie or TV show you are watching on your mobile device to your TV. What file types are supported with Play on Roku?

Play on Roku supports the following file types:

  • Photos: JPG and PNG
    Video: MP4 (MPEG-4 Pt 14), MOV, M4V
    Music: MP3 and M4A (*DRM-protected music files, such as M4P, are not supported)

Notes:

  • Only videos captured with your mobile device are supported.
  • Non-standard aspect ratio videos (such as those taken with Instagram) may not be supported.

How do I use Play on Roku?

  1. Open the Roku mobile app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Launch Play on Roku by selecting the Photos+ icon photos button on Roku mobile app from the navigation bar at the bottom of the Roku mobile app.
  3. Select either Music, Photos, or Videos to begin choosing what to share from your mobile device. When prompted, grant access to your media library allowing the Roku mobile app to share your content.
  4. Select the photos, videos or songs to share on your TV.

How do my friends and I share photos at the same time?

To share photos from multiple mobile devices at the same time, you and your family and/or friends will each need to:

  1. Connect your compatible phones and tablets to the same wireless network that your Roku device is connected to.
  2. Install the Roku mobile app.
  3. Open the Roku mobile app.
  4. Launch Play on Roku by selecting the Photos+ icon photos button on Roku mobile app from the navigation bar at the bottom of the Roku mobile app.
  5. Select Photos.
  6. You and your family and/or friends can now share the photos stored on your mobile devices by tapping on a photo to begin casting to the TV. Play on Roku will automatically begin to display the photos from your library on the TV screen and automatically transition to the next person who wants to share photos.

How will our photos appear on the TV?

Once you have selected the photos you want to share, Play on Roku will show five photos from each of the connected mobile devices before moving to photos shared from the next device in the order in which you and your family and/or friends submitted photos.

Can my friends and I share videos and music as well?

Yes, Play on Roku will also play videos and music stored on your mobile device. Simply choose the video or music file that you wish to share on your Roku device and your videos or music will be played in the order they were shared to the Roku device.

Why are my photos not displaying even though the slideshow is changing on my phone?

If you have more than one Roku device, check that your mobile device is connected to the correct Roku device by tapping the settings icon settings button on Roku mobile app, then Switch Roku Device and select the appropriate Roku device.
