How to display photos on the TV using Play On Roku

The Roku® mobile app is a free application for iOS® and Android™ devices that turns your mobile device into a control center for your Roku streaming device. Play on Roku is a feature of the Roku mobile app that allows you to display, or cast, videos, photos and music stored on your mobile device onto your TV.

What do I need to use Play on Roku?

Play on Roku requires the latest version of the Roku mobile application. For information on downloading and setting up the Roku mobile app, click here.

Play on Roku supports the following file types:

  • Music: MP3 and M4A (*DRM-protected music files, such as M4P, are not supported)
    Photos: JPG and PNG
    Video: MP4 (MPEG-4 Pt 14), MOV, M4V

Notes:

  • Only video taken with your mobile device is supported.
  • Non-standard aspect ratio videos (such as those taken with Vine or Instagram) are not supported.

How do I cast photos, music or video on my TV using Play on Roku?

  1. Open the Roku mobile app.
  2. Launch Play on Roku by selecting the Photos+ icon play on Roku icon from the navigation bar at the bottom of the Roku mobile app.
  3. Select either Music, Photos, or Videos to choose what to cast from your mobile device’s library. When prompted, allow the Roku mobile app to access your media library to enable the mobile app to cast your content.

How do my friends and I share photos at the same time?

To share photos from multiple mobile devices at the same time, you and your family and/or friends will each need to:

  1. Connect your mobile devices to the same wireless network that your Roku device is connected to.
  2. Install the Roku mobile app.
  3. Open the Roku mobile app.
  4. Launch Play on Roku by selecting the Photos+ icon play on Roku icon from the navigation bar at the bottom of the Roku mobile app.
  5. You and your family and/or friends can now share the photos stored on your mobile devices by tapping on a photo to begin casting to the TV. Play on Roku will automatically begin to display the photos in your library on the TV screen and transition to the next person who wants to cast photos automatically.

How will our photos appear on the TV?

Once you’ve selected the photos you want to share, Play on Roku will show five photos from each of the connected mobile devices before moving to photos shared from the next device in the order in which you and your family and/or friends submitted photos.

Can my friends and I share videos and music as well?

Yes, Play on Roku will also play videos and music stored on your mobile device. Simply choose the video or music file that you wish to cast to your Roku device and your videos or music will be played in the order they were shared to the Roku device.

My photos are not displaying even though the slideshow is changing on my phone. Why is that happening?

If you have more than one Roku device, check that your mobile device is connected to the correct Roku device by tapping the settings iconsettings icon, then Switch Roku Device and select the appropriate Roku device.
