Your Roku® streaming player or Roku TV™ provides you with access to stream audio and video from the internet. For this to work, your Roku device must maintain a good connection to your network and the internet. At any time, you can check the quality of this connection from the Settings menu on your Roku device.
How to begin the connection check
You can initiate the connection check with the following steps:
- Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
- Scroll up or down and select Settings.
- Select Network.
- Select Check connection.
- Note: If your Roku device is not connected to your network, you will not see the Check connection option. You will only see the Set up connection option. You need to connect your Roku device to your network and the internet to continue.
What does the connection check do?
When the connection check begins, your Roku device tries to connect to the wireless or wired network in your home. If successful, your Roku device then attempts to connect to the internet. A green check appears for each successful connection, while a red ‘x’ appears if a connection cannot be established.
When a green check appears for both connections, your Roku device has successfully connected to your network and the internet. In these cases, your Roku device will also test the strength of each connection and present the results. If the signal for both connections tests well, the connection check ends presenting the message, Connection check was successful.
If either connection tests poorly, an on-screen message presents an error code and a brief list of suggestions to help improve the connection. For help with an error code, learn more about how to resolve connectivity issues.
Can I review connection check results later?
You can access and review the results of the most recent connection check by visiting Settings > Network > About.
If your Roku device is connected via wireless network, there are two items to check.
- Signal strength: A measure of the strength of the wireless signal from your router*.
- Internet download speed: A measure of the speed of your internet connection. The date of the connection check is also reported.
If your Roku device has an Ethernet port and you are using a wired connection, Signal strength will not appear. You will only see results for Internet download speed.

What do the results mean?
If a connection check was performed recently, the signal strength and internet download speed will each list one of the following values: Excellent, Good, or Poor. An excellent or good result likely means the connection is functioning without issue. However, a poor connection can lead to playback issues or other unpredictable behavior, and should be addressed.
- If Signal strength is Poor, review tips for improving the wireless connection.
- If Internet download speed is Poor, make sure no other devices are streaming or downloading large files on your network. You may want to consider contacting your internet service provider, or ISP (usually your cable or phone company), and inquire about upgrading the speed of your internet connection.
What to do if the connection check shows a red ‘x’
- If a red ‘x’ appears for Wireless connection (or Wired connection if your compatible Roku device is connected to a wired network), your Roku device cannot make a connection to your router.
Return to the Network menu, select Set up connection, and try again to connect your Roku device to your network.
If you are uncertain that you are selecting the correct network, get help finding the wireless network name and password.
If you continue to have problems, learn what to do if your Roku device cannot access your home network.
- If a red ‘x’ appears for Internet connection, your Roku device is unable to make a connection to the internet.
To test the internet connection at your home, use your computer or a mobile device that is connected to your home network and try accessing a public website such as www.roku.com. If you cannot access the internet this way, contact your ISP and inquire about an outage in your area.
If you can access the internet from your computer or mobile device, double-check that you are connecting your Roku device to the correct wireless network. If the problem continues, restart your Roku device and the router.
Restarting your Roku device and the router
If you continue seeing a red ‘x’ after trying the suggestions above, try restarting your Roku device and the router.
- To restart a Roku player, go to Settings > System > System restart. To restart a Roku TV, go to Settings > System > Power > System restart. Alternatively, you can choose to unplug the Roku device from the power source and then plug it back in.
- To restart your router, check the instructions from your ISP or router vendor. In some cases, you can simply unplug it and then plug it back in, and in other cases it may require pressing a reset button on the router.
