How to add a non-certified channel to your Roku® streaming device

Background

Non-Certified channels can only be installed on a Roku device by using the channel’s dedicated access code (e.g. “FG324”) provided by the developer of the channel, and therefore are not found in the Roku Channel Store. Non-certified channels may be used by channel developers for testing, or to limit access to their channel to a smaller set of our users. Users should take caution when using non-certified channels.

Why does Roku have non-certified channels?

Developers need a way to test their channels, and non-certified channels allow them to reach a smaller set of users prior to publishing the channel in the Roku Channel Store. Some publishers wish to limit distribution of channels to a small subset of users, for example, just their employees.

Why may Roku block my use of non-certified channels?

Roku may remove any non-certified channel that violates copyright, contains illegal content, or otherwise violates Roku’s terms and conditions. When a non-certified channel associated with your Roku account is removed for violating Roku’s terms and conditions, your Roku account may be blocked from adding additional non-certified channels.

How do I know if a non-certified channel has content that violates Roku’s terms and conditions?

Roku requires all channels to abide by Roku’s terms and conditions, and to distribute only legal content. Roku does not test or review non-certified channels prior to publication. However, if Roku later determines that a non-certified channel violates Roku’s terms and conditions, including by distributing content that infringes copyrights held by others or by distributing illegal content, then Roku may remove the channel. Users should take caution when installing and using non-certified channels. Users should consider the terms and conditions on which a non-certified channel is being offered, as well as the nature of the content that is being available through the channel, before installing the channel.

How do I add a non-certified channel?

To download and install a non-certified channel:

  1. Go to my.roku.com on your computer or smartphone.
  2. If prompted, sign in to your Roku account.
  3. Under Manage account select Add channel with a code.
  4. Enter the channel access code received from the channel provider and select Add Channel.
  5. Acknowledge the warning message that appears:

    WARNING!
    THIS IS A NON-CERTIFIED CHANNEL. Roku requires all channels to abide by Roku’s terms and conditions, and to distribute only legal content. Roku does not test or review non-certified channels. By continuing, you acknowledge you are accessing a non-certified channel that may include content that is offensive or inappropriate for some audiences. Moreover, if Roku determines that this channel violates copyright, contains illegal content, or otherwise violates Roku’s terms and conditions, then ROKU MAY REMOVE THIS CHANNEL WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE AND YOUR ACCOUNT MAY BE BLOCKED FROM ADDING ANY OTHER NON-CERTIFIED CHANNELS.

The channel will not immediately appear in the list of channels on your Roku streaming player or Roku TV. Your Roku device checks every 24 to 36 hours for any new channels you have added from the website and automatically installs them. If you would like to download the channel immediately, go to your Roku device and select Settings > System > System update > Check now.

Once downloaded, new channels are added to the list of channels under Home on the main screen of your Roku device. Scroll down and you will see your new channel at the bottom the list. If you want to move it, learn how to move channels on your Roku streaming device.

I think I bought a subscription for a non-certified channel from Roku. How do I get a refund?

Roku does not sell subscriptions to non-certified channels. Users should contact the person who sold the subscription to the non-certified channel.
