Why does the Roku mobile app not see my Roku® streaming device?


The Roku mobile app is a free application for iOS® and Android™ devices that turns your mobile device into a control center for your Roku streaming player or Roku TV™. The first step to using the mobile app as a Roku remote is to choose your Roku device from the discovery screen that appears when you first launch the app.

If you do not see your Roku device on the discovery screen, the app cannot connect to your Roku device for some reason. The suggestions in this article will help determine what may be causing this issue.

What should I check first?

Before exploring other possibilities, check that network access has not been disabled on your Roku device using the steps below:

  1. Press the Home button home on your Roku remote.
  2. Select Settings then System followed by Advanced system settings.
  3. Select External Control and finally Network access.
  4. Make sure Default or Permissive is selected to use the mobile app.
    • Note: Most users select Default. The Permissive setting is typically used with an advanced network configuration.

What else may prevent my Roku device from appearing on the discovery screen?

If you checked network access and it is enabled, but your Roku device is still not appearing on the discovery screen, it may be caused by one of the following:

  1. Your Roku device and your mobile device are not connected to the same network.
    Both devices must be connected to the same network to communicate successfully. Learn what to look for if you need help finding the correct wireless network.
  2. Your Roku device is using a public IP address.
    Devices on your network, such as your Roku device, should be using a private IP address that falls within one of the following ranges:

    You can find the IP address by going to Settings > Network > About on your Roku device. If the IP address is not inside one of the private ranges, your Roku device is assigned a public IP address. This is most common when a router* is not present on your network. Install a router to manage the IP addresses, or contact your ISP or the person who manages your network to help resolve the problem.
  3. Your mobile device is connected to a VPN.
    A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is commonly used when you work from home and need to connect your computer or mobile device to the work network. Check that your mobile device is not connected to a VPN when using the Roku mobile app since some VPN applications route all traffic through the VPN and therefore cause your Roku device not to be visible.
  4. Your network has AP isolation enabled.
    AP (access point) isolation prevents devices from communicating on a wireless network. Refer to documentation for your router to learn how to check and disable this setting, or contact the person who manages your network for help.

After trying the suggestions above, I still do not see my Roku device

If your device still does not appear on the discovery screen, try one of the following:

  1. Connect to your Roku device manually.
    At the bottom of the discovery screen, tap Connect Manually and enter the IP address of your Roku device. You can find the IP address by visiting Settings > Network > About on your Roku device.
  2. Restart your Roku device.
    After you restart your Roku device, ensure that it is connected to the correct wireless network.
  3. Restart the Roku mobile app.
    Restart the app by doing one of the following:
    • On iOS devices, double click the iOS home button and then swipe the Roku app to close it. After it has been closed, tap on the Roku app icon to launch.
    • On Android devices, press the Recents button and then swipe the Roku app to close it. After it has been closed, tap on the Roku app icon to launch.
  4. Check the network name.
    Many routers today utilize two signals to provide better speed and coverage. These devices are generally referred to as dual band routers because they transmit data at the lower 2.4 GHz band and at the higher 5 GHz band. When connecting devices to your wireless network, the choices may include more than one network with a similar name (e.g., MyNetwork_2.4GHz, MyNetwork_5GHz). Confirm that your Roku device and your mobile device are connected to the same band and network name.
